Hey everybody and welcome to Travis and Lzzy Watch American Idol. This week we are tackling the Top 10 as they cover one of my favorite artists (mine too!) Billy Joel. Want to see how they did? Then read on.
TOP 10 (Billy Joel Week)
Travis: While he kind of missed the idea of what the song is really about and overall it was a bit too happy and bubbly, I actually liked his performance this week. Would I have preferred he did something else? Yeah but he did well with what he had.
Lzzy: I'm a fan of Deandre's but this was just not doing it for me. It seemed a little all over the place pitch-wise and it just felt kind of soulless. I expected more from Deandre.
2. Erika Van Pelt-New York State of Mind
Travis: First off: love the new hair, it suits her much better than her dried out blonde locks. Second: she sounded amazing. She oversang ever so slightly but she did great overall.
Lzzy: Erika's performance was great (ditto on the hair) but I feel she's just not connecting with the voters. Shame really when you think of how good she is.
3. Joshua Ledet-She's Got a Way
Travis: I usually love Joshua's performances but this one felt...empty. Like he didn't care about the song and was just going through the paces. He'll be fine though.
Lzzy: It was alright but I agree, it felt empty compared to his previous performances. Here's hoping next week goes great.
4. Skylar Laine-Shameless
Travis: Skylar definitely struggled with her lower register during her performance but otherwise an overall solid performance. Not her best but it won't get her sent home.
Lzzy: It was alright. She still bugs me but she was a lot more restrained this week and I like a restrained Skylar. Good vocals.
5. Elise Testone-Vienna
Travis: Take that 13 year old girls who have done nothing but hate on her this entire time! She was G-E-NIUS. That run at the end, as well as her overall performance was brilliant. The best of the week by a country mile.
Lzzy: Amazing, simply amazing. She has such control over her voice that it's astounding. I just wonder if a fully grown woman can win American Idol? If anyone can do it, it's Elise.
6. Phillip Phillips-Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Travis: Initially I wasn't a fan of Phillips rendition of Movin' Out, my favorite Billy Joel song. But then I kept listening to it and it started to grow on me. It has all the elements of a good Phillip song and at the end of the day, while I miss the "heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack" Phillip did a good job with his cover.
Lzzy: The only man who can get away with grey-on-grey-on-grey and still look gorgeous. I loved this. Super original. Mmm-mmm.
7. Hollie Cavanagh-Honesty
Travis: All it takes is one note to throw you off your game. This is exactly what happened to Hollie this week. She's usually really calm and composed and even if she hits a few bum notes she usually recovers well but when she lost it early on, she really lost it.
Lzzy: Well she looked good. But yeah, that's the nicest thing I have to say about her performance. The second worst performance of the night in my opinion. At least Heejun had fun.
8. Heejun Han-My Life
Travis: *stares blankly at the television* Well that's...yeah. Words seem to escape me with this one. I appreciate his balls for doing something like this but...wow.
Lzzy: I'll give him credit for trying something different but that was terrible. He lost any semblance of diction, notes or anything that is needed for, oh I don't know, a SINGING competition. Worst of the night.
9. Jessica Sanchez-Everybody Has a Dream
Travis: There is no doubt that Jessica has a great voice. She has a beautiful voice. Problem is, when compared to Elise or Skylar she seems kind of...boring. She's got talent for days but I'd rather buy a Skylar or Elise album at this point. Good performance though.
Lzzy: She was wonderful, absolutely flawless. She rocks the ballads. I have absolutely no complaints.
10. Colton Dixon-Piano Man
Travis: Piano Man is a hard song to do well. Colton did it well. It suited his voice perfectly and I think he just blipped higher on my radar now. Great job Colton!
Lzzy: The lost Jonas pulled off a tender, heartfelt performance and certainly gave it his all. Oh and that red piano was pretty awesome too. I just hope they don't cut his hair, it's one of the things that makes him amazing.
Eliminated This Week:
-Erika Van Pelt
I'm bummed she's going home but the sad truth is it was probably inevitable she was going to go either this week or next week. I guess it was a matter of facing the obvious. She did great during her run though.
Well that does it for this week, see you all next week.
